I'm going to Disney World!

Hello, Happy Hump Day to you all! I won't be posting for a few days because soon I'm leaving for Disney World! Sadly it's not for a Disney running event, just a vacation #runnerproblems. I've been a few times so I know the basics, and my sister is slightly obsessed and has become a walking tour guide to Disney.  I'm most excited to ride some rides, wear Minnie ears, and act like a five year old.

I'm going to try to get some great AM runs in but of course will be enjoying myself in the happiest place on earth. I'm going to try to eat pretty on point during the day and treat myself to things I really want aka LIVING.   I think it's really important on vacation to unplug and that means not checking my phone or email or social media.  While I do dread coming back to literally hundreds of emails (mostly junk) and sorting through them, getting a chance to not be stressed out by the interwebs for a few days is way worth it!

I might tweet a bit because it's so fast and easy on my phone (so follow me @BreatheBlog for tweets!) but that's it!Getting disconnected and spending quality time with people at leisure is rare these days so it's important to remember that twitter and blogs and Facebook will all still be there when you get online again.

Any suggestions for fun things to do or place to eat in Disney World?

Color Run Baltimore Recap

As I read my new issue of Runner's World this past week which featured the popularity of Color Runs on the cover, it was only fortuitous that I was planning to run my first Color Run on Saturday! I had signed up with my boyfriend and bunch of my non-runner friends for the "Happiest 5K on the planet".

Check out the Color Run!

In case you haven't heard of it, the Color Run is an untimed 5K in which you are run through color stations where volunteers spray/squirt dyed cornstarch at you.  It mostly makes for really awesome photos when you are covered in a rainbow of color.  It was a drizzly morning in Baltimore as I was waiting in line for the 9 AM race (there was a 2 PM one as well due to popular demand).  I knew the event had sold out with about 25,000 running during the day. I hadn't slept well the night before so I was a little extra cranky and irritable.

I had rushed down to the start  line near Camden Yards baseball stadium to find a massive line (if you could call it that?) of people waiting to run.  It's nice because these kinds of runs are solely for fun so there was lots of teams, kids, and families running together.  I was really disappointed though because I thought the whole event was very unorganized.  It seemed at first they were letting really small waves of people start causing me to wait in line for almost an hour before I started.  There were also lots of people jumping a nearby gate and just starting to run which really messed things up.  I didn't think there was enough Color Run staff monitoring the crowd.

Finally it was my time to start and I started running/walking with my friends.  I mostly talked and slow jogged/walked whenever my friends need a breather since they hadn't trained or run in a longggg time.  I wasn't planning on racing anyways, just because of the nature of the event and the number of people who were walking, etc.  Thankfully it only drizzled a little through my run and ended up being a lot of fun trying to get the most color squirted on you as you passed through each Color Station.  The use of colored corn starch made it really unpleasant if you forgot to close your mouth though! The course was pretty much just around the stadium which was a little boring, but probably due to the mess logistics of the whole event.  Afterwards it was time for lots of lots of photos and dancing to the DJ as people were instructed to throw more color on each other.

Overall it was a fun event, but I'd only do it again if a big group of people wanted to run. The color totally washed off of you pretty easily and out of your clothes too, in case you were wondering.  I think if you are looking for a fun way to get active and have fun with your friends, even if they aren't runners or big into exercising this is a great event! The Color Run is the original I think but there are also the Color Me Rad run which is the same concept and a slew of different style fun 5Ks floating around now due to their popularity!

Keep Smiling!

Well last weekend was my birthday which was fabulous, though I do miss celebrating them at home with my mom who gets me birthday balloons and puts a birthday place mat at my seat at the table. Yes, I like pretending I am 5, not 25 :) I got a little blue box (another one! So lucky!) from my favorite guy which had a really elegant, simple ring along with some coconut gluten-free waffles on my birthday morning.  Oh and a nose piercing happened finally :) I definitely don't have a problem celebrating my birthday and treating myself!

My birthday involved one too many adult beverages like these

and sweets including these amazing lavendar honey goat's milk doughnuts with coffee ice cream. What?!

And then some sushi dinner happened this week. And then skipping a workout to go see Iron Man 3.  I was feeling anxious yesterday because I should be hitting the gym and clean eats hard after a bunch of dinners out this past week. I also didn't feel like going grocery shopping on my birthday after a late night out so I've been buying my lunch at work and not drinking enough water.

Then I stare at my teeny bikini from Victoria's Secret I bought, just hanging on the wall to remind me that bikini season is around the corner.  Instead of beating myself up though, I remember that healthy living is a lifestyle and should just happen. Yes there are conscious decisions made but there are way more important things to stress out about than eating so-so one week and missing a few workouts. And I did get in 2 AM workouts this week so far so GO ME. Healthy living isn't something I can fail at or need to start over. It's something that goes on as long as I'm living so I just need to eat some greens and get in a good sweat to balance out the martinis and cupcakes.

Keeping exercising enjoyable is important- that's why I'm doing my first Color Run in Baltimore on Saturday. It's not about my time or how many calories are burned. It's about being happy and getting covered in a rainbow of color with all my friends.  If you are having a rough week or feeling a little down, smile and move on. Today is a new day!

Have you ever done a Color Run?

Sweaty Survey

A few weeks ago I saw this survey from Kim at My Healthy Nest  and thought it would be super fun to fill out!
Her super sweaty questions were:

1. Which are you more responsive to during a workout: positive encouragement or peer pressure?
Definitely positive encouragement.  For example, I feel really self conscious at Crossfit but having a coach tell me I'm getting stronger and giving me a high five makes me feel awesome and keeps me coming back!
2. What’s something on your fitness bucket list?
Running a full marathon is (which I'm signed up for in the fall!) and also getting that elusive Boston qualifying time one day.  I'd also really like to run Big Sur after reading about it recently!
3. Would you rather be in a group fitness class that’s overwhelmingly crowded or awkwardly empty?
I hate feeling awkward but I'm going to have to go with the empty class. I hate when it's crowded and I have to be super conscious of not bumping into people. It takes away from my focus and makes me feel anxious.
4. Rank these activities in order of your preference/interest (favorite to least favorite): running, Zumba, yoga, Cross Fit, swimming, hiking, biking, pilates, kickboxing, sports that involve balls, spinning, weight lifting.
Running, Crossfit, Yoga, weight lifting, spinning, sports with balls, pilates, biking, hiking (I don't do this enough!), kickboxing, and Zumba. I tried zumba once and it didn't feel it was a good enough workout and I felt anxious trying to keep up!
5. Would you rather work out next to someone with major B.O. or someone who grunts constantly?
Oh gosh, I suppose grunting. B.O. is really distracting, ugh.
6. What’s your standard workout wear? (T-shirt/tank top, shorts/capris?)
I love tanks now that I have baby biceps so usually a  dry-wick tank and black capris.
7. Favorite post-workout snack?
Sometimes a smoothie or anything involving banana and peanut/almond butter.
8. Which are your strongest muscles? Most neglected?
My strongest muscles are probably my legs (not sure which exactly) from running and my most neglected are probably my chest muscles. I'm working on building strength though!
9. Would you rather be trained by Jillian Michaels or Bob Harper? (Or a favorite celeb trainer of your choice!)
Probably Jillian Michaels because she is so tough and I love her quote "Get comfortable with being uncomfortable!”
10. What’s one thing you’ve learned about fitness or your body in the last year?
I've learned that my body is so much stronger than I think.  I think constantly pushing myself amazes me because I never know how much stronger it can be!

Also I was recently asked to review some products from Vitacost which is a great online store to buy vitamins, supplements, and other health foods since some of those items can be expensive in stores! I had previous done a review with them and this time I'll share some of the products I really liked.
I have oily, acne prone skin so like keeping face wipes around in case I'm lazy and don't feel like washing my face and taking my makeup off at night.   These Blum Naturals wipes are individually wrapped and use organic tea tree oil to remove makeup and made my skin feel really clean and soft.

Also I am a huge coffee and tea drinker and always on the look out for new brands to try out.  I got a bag of this Kona coffee Gourmet Blend which was a really nice tasting dark roast coffee. I used it in my french press so I really got that strong coffee taste!

Lastly, I've been trying to take more BCAAs because all I read is how amino acids are important for muscle recovery  when working out.  They sent me a sample container of the Nutrex BCAA Drive Black.
It apparently has 2:1:1 ratio of the amino acids l-leucine, l-isoleucine, and l-valine.  I have noticed I'm less sore when I regularly take them.  I think I prefer a powder version though because the recommended serving is 5 of these big tablets before a workout which seems like a lot to take!
Anyways if you are looking for another place to buy some supplements, check out Vitacost. They offer free shipping with orders over $49 which is a pretty good deal.
Note: I was not financially compensated for this post.  I did receive the aforementioned prodcuts in exchange for this review.

Fill out the Sweaty Survey on your blog and link it here so can hear more about you! What's something on your fitness bucket list?

Quarter of a Century

Guess what all, Cinco de Mayo= my birthday and this year I turned a quarter century old.  YIKES!

Turning old (yes old, not older) scares me because I feel like my twenties have been so full of change and uncertainty. Age is just a number but fear pushes me to try things I never thought I would or was afraid to before because I want to live life to the fullest and be happy.

5 Things I Love That I've Done In the Last 5 Years(Because 25 would take me all month to write)

1.  Lived away at university and had some wild and crazy times while I was young and stupid but had good people watching my back.

2. Tested multiple career interests out.  I've tried out multiple jobs and possible fields of interest throughout internships in college and two full-time jobs I've had out of school. Some days I'm frustrated that I didn't automatically start with the ultimate job I want, but I'm glad to have taken the time to find what I want to do. You never know where  life leads you and picking a dream career out of the air without actually doing it is unrealistic!

3.  Went on a crazy last minute vacation to Scotland . I went my best girls in college to crash on our friend's couch, who had been studying abroad. It was great to just buy a plane ticket and have a little overseas adventure.

4.  Found a passion for running and health/fitness. I still have a massive sweet tooth but have learned about balancing the treats with what makes my body feel good and properly fuels it. Running has become a great source of pride, competition  and stress-relief. Who would have thought 3 years ago that this girl would have run 4 half marathons (all sub-2 at that!)?

5. Have prioritized my time in my life. Still working on this , but my time is more precious now with lots of work and school sometimes, etc.  I'm spending time with my friends who matter, going to activities that I want to go to, and realizing that I can't do everything or be everywhere. This also includes adding me time to watch crappy TV, get my nails done, and relax. I think realizing your priorities is an important part of growing up. For my birthday yesterday I pretty much did nothing which has been a change from my super busy weekends!

5 Things I Hope to Do Before I'm Thirty

1. Finish a full marathon (signed up for October, but still makes the list!)

2. Get into a Masters program and then get settled into the career I want to be in (occupational therapy!)

3.  Accept my body and self more each day.
I've heard from multiple people that your twenties are full of insecurity and you can become more self-accepting and self-loving, or at least not so self-deprecating and insecure in your thirties.  I've grown a lot in this area but still have a ways to go as a young female because it's hard, especially when I see abs on abs online everyday!

4. Stop waiting for the right time and go travel to places I want to go.
Right now I'm waiting for more money and more time to go travel abroad and even to places in the U.S. There is never going to be a right time, I just need to make it happen and it's been a while since I've gone somewhere new.

5. Continue to push anxiety and negativity out of my life and do what makes me happy without worrying what others will think.

Just Another Nike Women's Half DC Recap Part 2

Here's to the actual Nike Women's Half Marathon race!

The race started at 7 AM and as always I was got into the 7:30-8:59 corral with 15 minutes to spare. I was really anxious and slept really crappy, getting only about 5 hours of sleep including me waking up in a panic in the middle of the night. I was also nervous because I was kind of in the front and had lots of room in my corral. Oh yeah and I started flipping out because I was right next to the stage where OMG Shalane Flanagan was. She is my running idol, and I just read the issue of Runner's World  with her and Kara Goucher on the cover so it was a big deal.  They had Shalane and Joan Benoit Samuelson there for a moment of silence for Boston.  Both of them were "jogging" the 13.1 miles. You know, just an easy run, haha. I saw Shalane at one point around mile 4, and it totally pushed me.

My legs had been really tight from crosstraining all week and even though I did my best to foamroll and stretch all week but it didn't seem to help much raceday. My goal was to run sub 1:40, or a 7:30 pace. The run itself was pretty basic though I had never run through a tunnel so that was really fun, minus how it messed up my Garmin satellites so my pace and distance seemed a little inaccurate.  I thought Nike did a great job having water and Nuun about every 2 miles with lots of volunteers.  The course was mostly flat, which is nice, but I was a little disappointed that most of it was like the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler which I had just run.  It actually got a little boring, especially that stretch around Mile 8, that is completely straight.  There were no on course photographers for me to try to smile at which I thought was pretty lame of Nike, especially with the hefty registration fee.

This race was also the first time I had to stop and use a port a potty during a race. It was mostly my anxiety and nerves, but thank goodness I didn't have to wait for one to be open.  Around Mile 8 or so I found a 7:30 pacer (I didn't know Nike was having pacers?) so to keep pushing myself during my hardest miles 8-10, I kept up with the pace group.  This race was a really mental one for me where I had to push out all the negative thoughts saying my legs were too tight and that I wasn't good enough.  There were a lot of great spectators and signs that Nike had placed along the course for motivation which helped me focus. The 7:30 pacer was really great at motivating his group and during the final stretch he said to just push with all you've got as he called out how many km were left.

Eventually the finish line was in sight, but it seemed like it took forever to get there. WHY?!  My legs were so tight  that I just had to keep fighting to reach my goal.  I was so focused on that last stretch that I didn't even hear my friends screaming my name.  As soon as I high-fived Shalane at the finish line I burst into tears as emotions poured over me. I ran for Boston. I ran for those who can't anymore. I ran for me.  I didn't know what my exact time was because my Garmin got messed up with the tunnel, but I thought I had reached my goal because I was way ahead of the pacer at the end.  I looked sweet, rocked my run, and had gotten a shiny new PR along with that shiny Tiffany's necklace all on a crappy night's sleep.

Front of shirt: "Fast Girls Have Good Times"
Back of shirt: "Your pace or mine?"

After the race I got my little blue box from an ROTC man in a tuxedo, picked up my finisher tee, and found my friends.  I was still all worked up because crossing that finish is like nothing else.  My boyfriend found out my time to be 1:39:49. Like my shirt said, fast girls have good times ;) Post-race there wasn't much going on, but I did get my makeup done at the Bare Minerals tent which was some nice post-race pampering. When I got on the little stage to get my photo taken with the screen behind it, this girl congratulated me and said that I was her pacer and ran a really great race. That made me feel awesome that I was pushing someone else to run their best! Soon after I  had a fabulous brunch at Founding Farmers. Overall I liked the race swag, the water stops, and the organization.  It's really expensive so I don't know if I'd run it again. Later on Nike had the official results which showed I was overall 284/15,000 women and 67th in my division. So I felt like a beast for the rest of the day until the next when I felt anxious and self-doubting again.

Just Another Nike Women's Half DC Recap Part 1

Well, like many others I too ran the Nike Women's Inaugural DC Half this weekend.  I've always read great things about the Nike events and really wanted to run their San Francisco marathon or half marathon so I jumped on the chance when I read they were doing an inaugural race in DC! It's a female focused, Nike focused race which is super popular because you get a special Tiffany's necklace in lieu of a medal.  What lady doesn't  love a little blue box after running 13.1 miles?

Since the races are so popular there is a lottery to ensure a field of only 15,000 runners.  I was accepted automatically through the college student registration which still had a hefty registration fee of a little less than the normal $160, but still, that's the most I've ever paid (and probably will) for a race. I think you are pretty much paying for that Tiffany's swag.

My best friend lives in DC, and I just crashed on her couch for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler so she didn't  mind seeing me again :)  I got down to the city on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon the day prior to the race. I was expecting it to be crowded, and it was. The Georgetown Nike store was mobbed because it was full of Nike race gear, and the expo was in a tent a few blocks away near the water.  When I got there the line for packet pickup was around 0.25 miles long. YIKES!  The boyfriend went to go grab us Baked and Wired cupcakes for lunch (best cupcakes in Georgetown, IMO) which included a big red velvet cupcake for me.   The line ended up moving pretty quickly, but still, it was long. Finally I picked up my bib and pace wristband that I needed to get into the corral and headed to the Expotique.

I was really disappointed with this.  The tent was small and crowded. It only had major sponsors such as Luna bar and Nuun, which had samples of what they would have on the course, along with Team in Training.  The main focus I felt was the Nike shoes and the limited edition collection of NWM DC shoes.  They had a little game where you could type in a code on three different wall spots to see if you won a prize which was neat, but again, it was crowded so less fun than it seemed.  The limited edition Nike shoes are very pretty and an appropriate Tiffany blue color but a little expensive for my budget.  I ended up getting the half zip (pre-birthday gift to myself) from the Nike Store which was less crowded on the way back.  I also got to find my name on the wall outside the Nike store with all the runners names which I thought was really cool.  Afterwards I had a fairly relaxing afternoon and dinner to gear up for the race the next morning.

Next up, race recap Part 2 of the actual race :) Keep reading!

Friday Favorites!

I'm super excited to be running the Nike Women's DC Half this weekend! I'm starting to feel sick today (OH NO!) so I'm loading up on vitamin C, echinacea, and getting lots of rest! I'll be rocking a black running skirt, black arm warmers, and mint green sassy tank I made so if you're running it, look out for me! I'm getting into DC tomorrow and worried about all the crowds of lady runners since it seems like everyone is running this. I am hoping to make a little informal Sweat Pink Ambassador meet up for some cupcakes so hopefully I can get around the city quickly.

Getting a Tiffany's necklace at the finish is going to be pretty baller also.

Anyways, once again it is Friday so here are some things I'm loving lately!

1. Favorite Nighttime Snack:
I've have finished off a box of these this week. It's the perfect little non-dairy dessert for only 100 calories per sandwich. It tastes like a regular ice cream sandwich and satisfies my late night sweet tooth!

2. Favorite Workout Song

Girls Love Beyonce by Drake has been on my playlist all week. I love Drake as a rapper and this song has a great beat for running!

3. Favorite Fitness Purchase
Get your own here!

Earlier this week Living Proof Fit Gear had a sale on some tanks in their etsy store so I grabbed this Crossfit inspired tank that I had my eye on for a while. It arrived on Wednesday and is super soft, cute, and bright! I can't wait to workout in it!

4. Favorite Breakfast of the week

This morning I'm feeling sick so I wanted a delcious breakfast. I had found this recipe on instagram a while back and decided that funfetti pancakes should cheer me up.  The ladies over at Go Super Sisters always post awesome, healthy recipes so check them out for some inspiration. The pancakes were fluffy and definitely had the texture of coconut flour which takes some getting used to, but they were delicious!
I LOVE funfetti everything so having some pancakes that were also healthy, less than 300 calories, and with a whooping 26 g of protein was an awesome way to start the day!

Anybody else excited to be running Nike Women's DC Half?

Red Hot Run 5K Recap

Last night the local running store, Charm City Run in Baltimore, held a Boston Strong run .  We all wore yellow and blue ribbons and went for a great 3.5 miles along the inner harbor to the Baltimore World Trade Center and back to the store. Most people were wearing Boston team shirts or yellow and blue.  It felt great to be part of a such a strong running community.

By the way, I found Betty Lou's snacks via twitter and sampled one of their cherry gluten free fruit bars the other day. It was amazing and even my boyfriend tried it and said it tasted just like cherry pie!

If you are looking for a new sweet snack, check them out online or on facebook! Their snacks contain no wheat, refined sugars, genetically modified ingredients, or hydrogenated oils!

Finally here's a promised recap of a really awesome 5K I ran a week or so ago. I was itching to do another short race post Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, before the Nike Women's DC half (this weekend!).  I saw there was a local 5K benefiting a school just a few minutes away so I registered online.  I woke up, got dressed and realized I forgot my Garmin. Yikes, I really like having my Garmin for 5Ks to help pace myself but looks like I was doing this race without it.  The Red Hot Run 5K was a local race and was really small with a little over 200 runners in the 5K, not counting the kids 1 mile fun run.  It was a gorgeous, sunny morning and there was lots of families and kids from the school which made for a nice, happy atmosphere.

I started right in the front of the pack with some really fast guys, who later left me in the dust.  The course went through a wooded neighborhood which was all hills up and down pretty much the whole 5K so it was more challenging than I had expected.  Eventually as I turned the corner from the last hill onto the final (flat!) stretch a spectator yelled out that I was the first girl so far! Even though it's a small race it was still really exciting to hear that so I pushed it until the end.  I ended up PRing by a mere 1 second in 21:21! The refreshments afterwards were awesome and definitely out of the ordinary. There was a local cupcake shop La Cakerie serving about 6 different flavors of cupcakes, bags of pretzels and bananas, and also the school's catering company serving yummy samples of green smoothies and a kale salad. I treated myself to a cookie dough cupcake. I'm usually a red velvet kinda girl, but thought I should try something different after such a great race!

I never stay for awards ceremonies because I've never won anything at a race. Baltimore has a lot of fast ladies so this was out of the ordinary to wait around for awards! I was so excited waiting to hear my name called. This guy next to me said I must win races all the time which was flattering, even though I informed him it was very, very untrue. They called my name, and I walked down the hill to receive my prize which was a gift certificate for a pair of Brooks running shoes from my local running store. What?! I already happened to have accumulated 4 pairs of Brooks running shoes in the past couple of years so it's solely what I run in! I had come to this run alone, but it was great having that runners high and having strangers congratulate me on winning, even if I tried to minimize this all to my friends because it's such a small 5K.  I think I'm going to pick up a new pair of those purple Brooks Ravennas 4 for my upcoming marathon training :)

What is your favorite cupcake flavor?

Liebster Award

Today I have a fun post to share! Kristina over at "http://kristinamasten.com" nominated me for a Liebster Award!

The Liebster award is an "award" given to up and coming smaller bloggers or to someone who deserves recognition for their blogging. Apparently, Liebster is a German word meaning dearest. I don't know what the exact rules are, but it's a great way to discover new blogs and recognize blogs that you think are awesome!

Rules for the Liebster Award
  • Write 11 random facts about yourself.
  • Answer the 11 questions given by the person who nominated you.
  • Create 11 new questions.
  • Nominate 11 bloggers and mention them in your post.
  • Thank the person that nominated you and tell the people you’ve nominated.
11 Facts about Me:

Questions from Kristina:

1. What is your favorite relaxing activity?
I love spending a night in cooking a nice meal or baking something and then watching a movie with a class of wine in some comfy clothes. I also really like taking a long hot shower and painting my nails.
2. If you have one, what is your favorite go-to workout when you are stressed?
Running, hands down. Running is like therapy!
3. Favorite brand of coffee?
I love lots of different coffee such as Kona, Starbucks, Zeke's local  but lately I've been addicted to the Dunkin Donuts coconut flavored coffee I picked up at Target! YUM!
4. What are your pet’s names?
I currently don't have any pets but my family has 4 cats named Ginger, Oreo, Audrey, and Lucy.
5. How long have you been blogging?
I've only been blogging since October and am still getting the hang out it. Hopefully there is somebody out there who likes it!
6. What is your favorite recipe to make at home?
I love baking especially fancy cupcakes and banana nut muffins.  Food-wise, I think I make a pretty great chili in the slow cooker and love that dinner is ready when I get home from work!
7. What is your guilty pleasure?
My guilty pleasure is probably watching bad TV, specifically anything on Bravo channel such as Millionaire Matchmaker  and The Real Housewives series.  It's all awful "reality" TV but fun to watch something mindless at the end of the day.  There is also that "can't look away from a train wreck" intrigue!
8. How do you motivate yourself to be active?
Usually having a race I signed up for helps to keep me training. I always think about how good I feel afterwards if I'm having trouble getting to the gym.  Tracking on dailymile and following people on twitter/instagram can give me a kick in the butt if I'm thinking of skipping a workout for no serious reason too.
9. Favorite artist to run/workout to?
Lately it has been Ke$ha, old Fall Out Boy, or Tegan and Sara.
10. Favorite vacation spot?
I'm dying to go to Europe again-I went to Paris once and it was amazing.  I also really liked California.  They have some beautiful beaches, great weather, and delicious food as well!
11. What is one of your long term goals?
Fitness-wise, to finish my first full marathon in October and in the long term future, to qualify for Boston. Life-wise, to get into graduate school and been in a career where I am happy.
My Questions for my Nominees:
1. What is your favorite comfort food?
2. When's your favorite time to workout?
3. Where is the most relaxing place to be?
4. What are you most excited for this summer?
